Two years ago, Shigeru Miyamoto introduced the Nintendo "Project Giant Robot". Now, the gaming titan announced that the project will not push through anymore. Get the updates on what happened and what Nintendo's next move will be.

Goodbye Nintendo "Project Giant Robot"

According to PolygonNintendo "Project Giant Robot", the Wii U game that seemed to be going downhill for years, has finally been scrapped. The game did not have a full title and was shown only once at the 2014 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). Miyamoto gave the press a demo, alongside two games that would eventually become "Star Fox Zero" and "Star Fox Guard".

How did the game go? In Nintendo "Project Giant Robot", a player will use the Wii U GamePad to control the giant robot, knocking over buildings and other enemies as you tore through a city.

Nintendo "Project Giant Robot": what went wrong?

The company recently released its latest earnings report and Nintendo "Project Giant Robot" was nowhere in sight. In Nintendo's last Q3 earnings report, it still was being listed as an upcoming item. The company said that the decision was made after considering Nintendo's overall product and development strategy.

According to The Guardian, many believe that the console was cursed from the beginning - from the first announcement at the 2011 E3 video game conference in Los Angeles. Prior to that, Nintendo made vague references to "Project Cafe", a new piece of hardware in development at the company’s R&D labs, but the nature of the device was unclear. The E3 presentation was supposed to be the big reveal.

Then, came the Nintendo press conference, in front of the whole games industry. The Wii U was revealed. Reggie-Fils-Aimé, head of Nintendo America, gave a seemingly dull introduction and showed the unique GamePad controller, with its built-in display. After this, came a showreel of gaming moments, then nothing.

Many gamers were confused; was the Wii U GamePad an extension to the original Wii? Was it an entirely new console? That evening, the late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata gave a statement that the misunderstanding came from the company's overemphasis on the controller.

Nintendo "Project Giant Robot": is it because of the Switch?

This event comes after Nintendo confirmed in January that "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" would be the last first-party, packaged title to come to Wii U, as the company fully centers on the Switch console. Both the Nintendo "Project Giant Robot" and "Zelda" launch on March 3.

Are you a Nintendo afficionado? Were you hoping for the launch of Nintendo "Project Giant Robot"?
