GitHub is getting some big improvement this week. The online code repository has introduced, GitHub Topics, a new feature designed to help developers find project repositories similar to the one they are working for.

The news comes four months after web-based repository platform announced a new proprietary project management tool for tracking issues, notes and pull requests for code repositories. And barely a day, after GitLab, a Y Combinator-backed and GitHub main competitor, raised a whopping $20 million in its latest funding round.

GitHub Introduces New Feature

According to PC Tech Mag, GitHub has added a new feature called GitHub Topics, which can be used to classify repositories based on common subjects and find other subjects that user might also be interested in.

The new Topics also allows users to create subject-based connections between GitHub repositories and allows users to explore projects by type, technology, and more, to its code project platform.

Additionally, the new feature also allows code repository admins to add tags to their repositories' main pages, which will be displayed below the description of each project. Admins can add as many labels with their purpose, platform, language, community and more.

Topics suggestions are not applicable for private code repositories as they may injure some privacy concerns, according to GitHub. Private code repositories will only display as long as the user has permission to access them.

Machine Learning On GitHub

The popular code repository platform has also introduced machine learning technology in the new GitHub Topics feature.

As mentioned earlier by The Next Web, Topics uses machine learning to figure out what the repository is all about and suggests topics that it thinks are worth adding.

In addition to the machine learning-driven suggestion, the repository platform has also announced its next big update, which is expected to bring a few numbers of new features on board.

Founded in 2008, GitHub is a web-based version control repository and hosting service. The web-based hosting service offers a complete source code management (SCM) and distributed version control features. The company also provides access control and a number of collaboration features such as bug tracking, feature requests, task management, and wikis.
