Animated film "Sing" has been a hit for Illumination Entertainment. It grossed $429 million worldwide, including $250 million domestically. Now, a recent announcement for a sequel was made. Here's some details about "Sing 2."

The animated flick featured the voices of Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon as animals competing in an "American Idol"-ish singing competition. “Sing” also earned a best-animated movie nomination at the 2017 Golden Globes, but lost out to “Zootopia."

"Sing 2": meet director Garth Jennings

According to Business Insider, Director Garth Jennings shared that "Sing" took five years to develop but he still felt nervous leading to its showing last year. Jennings is best known for music video work in the 90s.

Jennings has been trying to develop an animated movie, after 2005's "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and 2017 indie movie "Son of Rainbow. The conception of "Sing" started after Jennings met with producer Chris Meledandri. He's the man behind the “Despicable Me” movies, as well as “The Secret Life of Pets.”

"Sing 2": why was "Sing" so successful?
The passion in Jennings' and Meledandri's ideas might have made the successful formula for "Sing." Meledandri wanted to center on a shifty theater owner, whose only way to save his business is to put on a singing competition to give notice to an unknown talent.

Taking into consideration that this was an animated children's' movie, it would be filled with pop songs and all the characters would be animals. Another thing is, their vision for the movie was executed correctly.

"Sing 2" set for Dec. 2020 release

According to Variety, Aside from "Sing 2", the studio also announced that “Secret Life of Pets 2” will be pushed back a year from July 3, 2018 to July 3, 2019. “Minions 2” has moved up a week, from July 10, 2020 to July 3, 2020.
