Google has developed a new AI that uses machine learning method to create high-resolution images out of low-resolution images to significantly shrink mobile data usage. The new software can cut the use of bandwidth by about a third.

RAISR Enhances Images

DSLRs and smartphone cameras can capture images with ultra high resolution pictures, and bigger image size means more overall data usage. Google's new Rapid and Accurate Image Super Resolution (RAISR) uses machine learning methods that can turn low-resolution images into high-resolution images, Phone Arena reported.

This could save people from their bandwidth problems when uploading or sharing high-resolution images. Google's new RAISR software is not like the traditional upscaling techniques that simply adds more pixels to low-resolution pictures. This traditional method may create less pixelated images, but it doesn't really bring the optimum version of the picture, unlike Google's RAISR.

RAISR Decreases Data Usage

RAISR is applicable for the Google+ app for certain Android phones.  Instead of getting the original high-resolution images over the network, it gets a version of the image that is 25percent its size and expands it on the phone for a more detailed photo. Google product manager John Nack posted a blog Wednesday saying RAISR's method can cut data usage by about one third, CNET reported.

Nack said they are planning to roll out this new software to a broader audience in the next few weeks. He didn't say where they will roll out the software, but it will definitely reach more Google+ users. Besides Google+, it can also be used to lower data usage on YouTube thumbnails, Google Play Store graphics, Google search results, and other Google run properties.

RAISR may not be the only technology of its kind, but it is up to 100 percent faster than the rest of the smarter upsampling technology out there. With its speed it can be used on typical mobile device for real time usage.
