The most common perception we all have about internships is that they are only for college students. What most, if not all, of us think is that a person has to get a 'real job' when he or she graduated from college. However, there are a number of good reasons why you should consider post-college internships.

One of the strongest reasons why you should consider a post-graduate internship is because your resume is not that strong enough, especially if you haven't taken the time to build your resume while in college. What better way then to strengthen your experience, your skills, and your resume than a post-graduate internship.

Moreover, you might also be thinking about changing your career focus. Let's say you graduated as a mathematics major but want to pursue a career in public relations. This is also a good start if you can't really find a full-time job.

When applying as a post-college intern, bear in mind that they don't explicitly indicate that the position is open only to recent graduates unless there really is a specification that it is only open for current students only.

When you apply, tell the hiring officer the reason why you are seeking for an internship instead of a full-time position. According to a study conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employees, 37 percent of those who have unpaid internships were able to get an offer while 61.3 percent of those with paid internship received one. Therefore, your chances of getting hired is higher if you are in a paid internship although this is not your main goal.

Once you have decided on a post-internship program, the next step is where to look. One of the easiest way to search is online, such as on Indeed or Idealist. These search engines have tools which can help you filter what you are looking for.

So go ahead and get your foot in the door with a post-graduate internship.
