Penobscot County grand jury has charged Zackery Mailloux, a 21-year-old Bangor man,  with one count each of intentional murder, kidnapping and gross sexual assault in the death of a Husson University student earlier this month.

If convicted, Mailloux could receive a 25-year jail term. Currently, he is being held at the Penobscot County Jail without bail.

Mailloux tied Brooke Locke, 21, of Auburn with duct tape and wire cords and used a necktie to kill her.

Police arrested Mailloux Nov. 18 after discovering the body of Locke at the couple's shared apartment in Essex Street Bangor. The court documents said that the couple lived together although they broke up, Bangor Daily News reports.

The affidavit in the case revealed that Mailloux called Bangor police about 2:00 p.m. Nov. 18 to self-report the strangulation of his girlfriend.

During the interrogation, Mailloux said that he killed Locke because he suspected her of cheating. The couple had an argument and then he 'manually strangled [her] to the point that he thought she was deceased. After a short time, Locke began to regain consciousness.'

The court documents said that he then tied Locke with a wire cord and duct tape 'for the entire morning. During this incident, Locke admitted that she had been in another relationship.'

Mailloux admitted that they had sexual intercourse while she was still tied. Following another argument, Mailloux took her to the bedroom and used a necktie to strangle Locke until she no longer resisted.

According to the affidavit, a photo of Locke's naked body tied with duct tape on the bed was found on Mailloux's phone.

Locke was a third-year occupational therapy student at Husson and a member of the Epsilon Tau Epsilon sorority.
