Wileyfox phone users are left next to nothing after operating system developer Cyanogen announced that it was shutting down its services and OS. Wileyfox , a British smartphone manufacturer running and using the now-defunct OS to its five phones such as Swift 2, Swift 2 Plus, Spark, Spark+, and Spark X is now eying a shift and bring Google's Android Nougat operating system to all of its handsets.

Wiley fox is just one of several companies that launched phones powered by Cyanogen OS together with notable vendors like Lenovo, which teamed up with Cyanogen for the ZUK Z1 phone. India's Yu Televentures also has several devices running Cyanogen OS, and it is likely that these manufacturers will also reveal their transition plans shortly, Android Central reported.

Wileyfox phone users expressed their sentiments about the turn of events specifically that it still leaves a big question mark to the phones' future since the company has yet to make a full and final plan. In a statement posted to Reddit, the firm said that in order to have smooth and consistent software and OS updates, the company is moving forward in completing its operating system strategy and software plans, Trusted Reviews reported.

With the post, the firm confirmed that part of the greater plan is to bring the entire Wileyfox portfolio onto Android Nougat, the latest version of Google Android's operating system, although plans of when this will happen is still nebulous, the source added. The decision of the company Cyanogen to shut down the CyanogenMod infrastructure was described as a deathblow for the operating system.

In a blog written by the firm, it confirmed that as part of the ongoing consolidation of Cyanogen, all services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will be discontinued no later than Dec, 31, 2016. It further informed that the open source project and source code will still remain available for anyone who wants to build CyanogenMod personally.

It can be recalled from past reports that Cyanogen is the company which attempted to take Android away from Google with a heavily-customized and competing alternative, but with its recent collapse it seems like it would no longer has the right to claim as the challenger.
