After Cyanogen Inc. announced that it will no longer support the nightly builds of the OS from Dec. 31, 2016, the CyanogenMod community will continue as Linage OS. This is certainly a good news for fans who supported the OS.

CyanogenMod is a free, community built distribution of Android, which greatly extends the capabilities of a person's device. CyanogenMod is a popular Custom ROM that its users can flash or even install on their Android gadgets replacing its OS completely. This can be done by rooting the Android device and installing a custom recovery prior to Custom Rom's flashing.

The developers of the OS, CyanogenMod, stated that they have lost their voice in the direction of the company. The CyanogenMod community fears that even though they will regroup and continue the development of the operating system, the thought of CyanogenMod community being sold to a third party company will be a huge weight on their shoulders, for the reason that there is a high possibility that this might happen.

Fortunately, the CyanogenMod team has been gearing up for an alternative plan. The project will now be called as Lineage OS by the CyanogenMod community, a rebranded moniker of the OS. The CyanogenMod team stated that Lineage OS will go back to their roots and will maintain the proficient quality and reliability of the operating system, according to Tech Crunch.

The Lineage OS will now be an independent team that will not have Cyanogen Inc.'s monetary support. The Lineage OS will just need the infrastructure required by the developers to work on the open source code by CyanogenMod, Neo Win reported.

This also means that less popular Android gadgets will no longer receive the Lineage OS because the team might have their focal point in developing famous devices, since those devices are high on demand. As a result, the transition will not affect the high-end Android devices.
