Tom Cruise's "The Mummy" reboot may paved the way for the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe, which is in essence like Marvel's superhero universe in its approach and principles. Monster movie fans may expect to see the classic monsters like Dracula, the Wolf Man and the Invisible Man together, but only if the "The Mummy" hits it big in the box-office.

Tom Cruise has taken "The Mummy" movie, not just to give the franchise an overhaul from Brendan Fraser's tongue-in-cheek series, but also to kick off the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe. Cruise plays as Nick Morton, a military leader, tasked to stop Sofia Boutella as the titular Mummy from destroying the city of London.

Alex Kurtzman, known for writing "Star Trek Into Darkness" and "Transformers" will direct the film and act as one of the creative pillars in making the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe, Slashfilm reported. Kurtzman will be taking Marvel's approach of providing the audience the opportunity to get to know the monsters in standalone films, rather than mixed them all together as what Warner Bros has done with the DC Extended Universe.

In fact, Kurtzman added that the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe may only be launched once the solo films of the classic monsters have been widely received starting with Tom Cruise's "The Mummy." This means that Warner Bros. classic monsters like Dracula, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man, Frankenstein, the Creatures from the Black Lagoon, and Abraham Van Helsing will each have their turn under the spotlight, The Verge reported.

Moreover, Kurtzman believed that Tom Cruise's "The Mummy" carries the burden of the fate of the other monsters. Kurtzman is joined by Chris Morgan, producer of the "Fast and Furious" franchise, in creating the big-budget "The Mummy" with all the elements of a blockbuster in a bid to reel in viewers who might be enticed to also patronize the upcoming monster movies currently in development.

Tom Cruise's "The Mummy" also features Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll, who is part of a group called the Prodigium whose mission is to find powerful monsters called gods. Crow acts as Marvel's Nick Fury or the glue to connect the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe.

Tom Cruise's "The Mummy" opens in theaters in June 9, 2017. Johnny Depp is rumored to appear in "The Invisible Man" in April 13, 2018.
