Due to the alarming rate of growing seismic activities, the Oficina Nacional de Emergncias (ONEMI) and Childean Geological Survey (SERNGEOMIN) has put the area near the Hudson volcano under Yellow alert since Saturday. This is a major precautionary measure considering the history of the volcano, which erupted in 1991 covering the whole province of Santa Cruz.

The raising of alert level to Yellow is usually due to a shift in behaviour of the Hudson Volcano, but this time, the alert is due the number of earthquakes that have accumulated for the past few months, Wired reported. Last Saturday, the Yellow alert is specifically for areas at the Cerro Hudson located at the southern part of Andes.

The Hudson Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in South America. It is located just 15 kilometers near the Pacific Coast. It has a 1.905-meter altitude and its crater has 500-meter diameter.

Towns Under Yellow Alert

Now, the alert has spread across to the Patagonia towns of Chile and Argentina, Santa Cruz province, and Aysen region. The towns under the alert are Perino Moreno, Los Antiguos, Ayen in Chile and Argentina, General Carrera, Aysen regions in Rio Ibañez Chile Chico, Merco Press reported.

Other Volcanic Activities in Hudson Volcano

Besides the present alert, the area around the Hudson Volcano was also in Yellow alert back in 2011. The alert resulted to an evacuation of residences covering a 45 kilometer radius around the volcano.

During the 1991 eruption, the Hudson Volcano spewed out cloud of ashes and gas that went up on an altitude of 18.000 meters. The ashes spread 40.000 sq kilometres around the volcano. Moreover, the glacier from the mounatin melted down as the lava and mud flow down.

The Hudson Volcano may not be one of the most popular volcanoes in the world, but it created one of the biggest eruptions in the second half o the 20^th century. I
