Derek Moore, a 37-year-old assistant football coach at Missouri Southern State University, died after being shot in the parking lot of the Northstar 14 movie theater in Joplin, Mo., on Friday night. He is survived by a 7-year-old son.

"We are stunned and deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our prayers are with Derek's family," MSSU Interim President Alan Marble said in an official statement. "We are ensuring that our employees and students have the emotional support they need during this difficult time."

Moore, who was in his first year with the Lions as offensive line coach, came to the university after three seasons at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. He has coached collegiate football for a total of 14 seasons.

"Derek was new to Missouri Southern but he was embraced by our campus and community," head coach Daryl Daye said in the statement. "He was a very likeable person who always had a smile on his face and made friends easily with our staff and players. This is an unspeakable loss for the MSSU athletics family."

Jeffery L. Bruner, a 39-year-old suspect, has been arrested and charged with Class A felony murder and armed criminal action. Bruner is currently being held at the Joplin City Jail without bail.

"It is not a random shooting. It was targeted," Sgt. Jared Delzell told the LA Times. "The motive is under investigation."

A memorial service and candlelight vigil has been organised for Moore at 4:30 p.m. CST Monday at Corley Auditorium on the school's campus.

"The Missouri Southern athletics community is deeply saddened by the events that have occurred. In times like this, our priority is to make sure we are there for our student-athletes, coaches and support staff in whatever way necessary," Athletics Director Jared Bruggeman said in the statement.

Homecoming activities and the school's home game against Lindenwood University have been postponed in the wake of the tragedy.

Jeff Boschee, assistant head basketball coach at MSSU, expressed his sadness and offered his prayer and condolences via Twitter:

"Saddened by the loss of fellow MSSU Lion Coach Derek Moore!! Thought & prayers for he & his family!!"
