Frito Lay has introduced several flavors of Lay's chips, right from plain salted to Spanish tomato and cheesy onion. However, the crisps company is getting creative this holiday season and will soon be introducing a chocolate flavor variant of the world famous potato chips next week.

The world's largest snack producer is stepping into a new territory with the 'Lay's Wavy Potato Chips dipped in milk chocolate.'

Lay's first attempt at the sweet and salty snack is just one of the many products that have hit the market in recent years. Others productas range from ice-cream stuffed with pretzels, pretzels coated with chocolate, Kettle Maple Bacon Potato Chips, Planter's Sweet & Salty Snack Mix, ConAgra's Crunch 'n' Munch and Sweet 'n' Salty Bugles.

"Flavors are getting more sophisticated and complex," Tom Vierhile, innovation insights director at DataMonitor, the consumer products research firm told USA Today. "We are seeing more products that may pair traditional flavor opposites like sweet and salty."

Ram Krishnan, vice president of marketing at Frito-Lay told USA Today that the chocolate-covered potato chips will be rolled out in limited editions and will be available at target stores only. However, if the flavor goes well with the customers, it could be manufactured on a daily basis and be available at other major stores too.

The chocolate-covered Lay's Wavy chips will only be seasonal and be available from Halloween through New Year's. It will be sold in a five-ounce bag for $3.45.

"When you try something drastically different, you have to walk before you can run," Krishnan said. "We wanted to test our way through this before we go big. If consumers buy it, it gives us latitude to offer other flavor combinations that we've never done, opens a world of possibilities that we haven't explored before."

The popularity of the soon-to-be introduced potato chips might also make way for other chocolate variants like dark chocolate, white chocolate and even peppermint.
