"Mad Max: Fury Road" went out to become one of 2015's most successful films, wherein the movie was a box office smash hit and a favorite at the Academy Awards (it won six awards out of 10 nominations). It became clear from then and there that a sequel was going to happen in the near future. Indeed, director George Miller announced earlier this year that he has enough material to work on a sequel, which will be titled "Mad Max: Wasteland," this time focusing on Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa.

 "Mad Max: Wasteland" filming

Filming for "Wasteland" will take place "in and Broken Hill," an area in New South Wales, Australia, The Guardian reported. It is said that filming could begin "as soon as alter this year."

"Mad Max: Wasteland" cast

Although nothing with respect to casting has been confirmed, Theron had been very vocal about wanting to reprise her role as Furiosa in future films. In an interview with MTV's Josh Horowitz, the actress said that she "would love to bring" the character back to life again.

"I can see how people are kind of responding to her. I look at my little girl and I'm like, 'yeah, I'd love to play this woman again,'" Theron teased.

Tom Hardy, who played Max Rockastansky in "Mad Max: Fury Road," might also appear in the second movie. His contract suggests that he will probably return for as many as two more "Mad Max" outings.

"Mad Max: Wasteland" plot

Reports suggest that the movie is actually a prequel that will show Furiosa's back story, which means fans will finally know how she got her mechanical arm.

There's a possibility that the prequel would go far back in time. Fans would probably learn about what happened when her real limb was replaced with a mechanical one or probably learn how she managed to acquire the War Rig.

The character herself became a huge breakout star, and little is known about her history. Uncovering the mystery behind such a strong woman would definitely make "Mad Max: Wasteland" a theatrical feast with a notable story.

"Mad Max: Wasteland" release date

The movie is speculated to come out in 2017.
