The MIT Technology Review has once again chosen their list of smartest companies in the world. These companies have been effective in integrating business and innovation to redefine what a smart company should be in today's world.

What's interesting about the top 10 smartest company list is that Apple is not in the list while Microsoft is down in the 26th spot. IBM and Intel did not even fare well themselves with IBM on the 45th and Intel on the 49th. Perhaps the explanation for this is found in another article written by one of the editors.

A smart company does not necessarily mean a high-tech company, the article says. It also has something to do how the company impacts the economic growth of the nation. They went on to say that although Facebook, Twitter, and other digital technologies bring a lot of value to people, that value does not necessarily translate to economic growth. The team also added that the technology industry's wealth is exclusive only in that industry because much of the economy of the country remains sluggish.

However, there is as the companies who made it to the list are doing their best to impact other industries, such as healthcare and transportation, with how they use emerging technologies. So what are the top 10 smartest companies in the world today and why?

Amazon tops the list because it continues to spread its influence and dominance in the retail industry. MIT also praised its use of the AI-powered Alexa.

Baidu comes in second place because of its influence in China. It is the country's leading search engine and is currently developing autonomous cars with the help of a Silicon Valley research team.

The world's largest DNA-sequencing company, Illumina, comes in third place. It is now developing Grail, a blood test that will detect cancer even before the symptoms appear.

Elon Musk's Tesla comes in fourth place while Aquion Energy is fifth. This company is being backed by Shell and Bill Gates in making innovative batteries.

Mobileye and 23andMe take the sixth and seventh place respectively. Mobileye partners with top car manufacturers around the globe by providing driving assistance technology. It is currently working on a technology that will totally make autonomous cars autonomous. 23andMe, on the other hand, sells Health + Ancestry reports that show carrier status for genetic variants for certain conditions.

To complete the top ten list are Alphabet, Spark Therapeutics, and Huawei. Alphabet became popular when it created an AI that beat the best Go player. Spark Therapeutic has been undergoing research regarding a kind of gene therapy that will cure one form of blindness. Huawei, of course, is the world's third largest smartphone provider.
