As the "Game of Thrones" near its season finale, HBO is having talks with "A Song of Ice and Fire" author George R.R. Martin on a possible Thrones prequel from Martin's extensive Westeros history. Speculations are rife about HBO's move to bring the popular "Game of Thrones" into the big screen, prodded by Martin's lobbying.

HBO's "Game of Thrones" has almost a cult following with 20 million viewers glued to the screen following the fate of their Westerosi heroes and heroines. The show has even garnered the most wins for a TV drama series in the history of the Emmy's as reported by the Independent.

It is not surprising that fans have expressed dismay when creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff announced that the show will only have 8 seasons with the last one rumored to have only six episodes as opposed to the usual ten. An award-winning fan-favorite show is worthy of another run, perhaps a prequel, a sentiment shared by Martin and the fans.

HBO's programming president Casey Bloys in an interview with Entertainment Weekly admitted that the network is currently having talks with Martin. The prolific author has announced early on that he has an extensive amount of fake Westeros history in his possession. Any of these volumes could be a potential "Game of Thrones" prequel.

Moreover, Martin has been very vocal about lobbying the network to bring the "Game of thrones" into the big screen. Given the elaborate production of the show and its cinematic appeal, the possibility of a movie is not an impractical move. Bloys makes no confirmation or denial on this matter, but only to say that the network is focused on serving the HBO subscribers.

In the meantime, fans will just have to wait and see if the producers and Martin will come to a mutual agreement. "Game of Thrones" Season 7 returns to HBO by summer 2017 with only seven episodes.
