Jim Collins first started his career as a teacher and researcher at the Stanford Graduate School of Business where he was awarded the "Most Distinguished Teaching Award." Then, he went on to become a senior executive for CNN International, a successful book author, and a management guru. His experience, though, is not limited to the corporate world as he worked with the social sector as well.

It's amazing how he's managed to do all that but he will be the first one to say that there's really no magic formula. However, there are certain habits you can practice that will lead you closer to your breakthrough.

If you really want to be successful not only as a student but in life as well, Collins said that you need to be a hedgehog. He drew the metaphor from the relationship between the fox and the hedgehog. He said a fox thinks of clever ways how to catch the hedgehog whereas the hedgehog only has one but very successful defense against the fox. In the same way, you should focus on the one thing that you can be great at and nurture that to make it even greater which will eventually give you some profitable returns in the future.

Another advice he gives is the decision to confront the brutal facts of life rather than hiding from it. A person who is not afraid of criticisms but is able to listen to it and do something about it will be able to change his life around.

He also said something about technology and new trends. Collins said that one should always view a new trend or technology with a question whether it can help you or distract you. If the technology can help propel your success, then use it. On the other hand, if it will take you farther from your goal, stay away from it. Keep being a hedgehog and never lose your focus.
