It has been confirmed that "Van Helsing" will be the second film of the Universal's Monster Cinematic Universe (UMCU) to take place in a modern setting after "The Mummy," starring Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe. Directed by Alex Kurtzman, it is set to hit theaters June 9, 2017.

One of the screenwriters Jon Spaihts, explained that the film doesn't owe much to prior films for it is a new creation, a monster hunter with encyclopedic knowledge on a present day setting. They still take inspiration from Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula," while evolving the concept into modern aspect.

Working alongside with him on the film is Eric Heisserer, who further revealed that their major inspiration for their Van Helsing version is "Mad Max." They also hinted that the infamous hunter might show up in other Monster Universe Films in the future, Gamespot reported.

It seems that the upcoming films will have similarities with Marvel and DC movies wherein the characters are mixed together and everything is happening in one place.

Furthermore, when asked how his Van Helsing will fit into the larger universe and whether fans will see the monster hunter outside his solo movie and throughout the franchise, Spaihts revealed over the phone that he do think that if the dark universe works the way Universal hoped fans find the protagonists and antagonists of those movies bumping into one another. He also said that he would imagine Van Helsing, as one of the world's best monster hunters, be seen again in other places, Film reported.

"Van Helsing" doesn't have a release date yet, but it is in the works alongside "Frankenstein" starring Javier Bardem, "The Invisible Man" starring Johnny Depp, "The Wolf Man" possibly starred by Dwayne Johnson and other films like "Dracula," "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" and "Bride of Frankenstein."
