One of the three teenagers suspected of killing an Australian college student in Oklahoma said they picked a target at random and decided to shoot him "for the fun of it," the Associated Press reported.

Christopher Lane, 22, of Melbourne, Australia, was found dead Friday of an apparent gunshot wound in the back. Lane was staying with his girlfriend and her family in Duncan, Oklahoma, where he was attending East Central University on a baseball scholarship.

According to Duncan Police Chief Danny Ford, a woman called 911 after watching Lane stagger across the road and fall to the ground. Ford also said one the teenagers suspected gave a detailed confession.

"They saw Christopher go by, and one of them said: 'There's our target,'" Ford said. "The boy who has talked to us said: 'We were bored and didn't have anything to do, so we decided to kill somebody.'"

The three teens: Michael Jones, 17, Chancey Luna, 16, and James Edwards, 15, await a court appearance Tuesday. Ford said he expects the district attorney to file first-degree murder charges Tuesday, when all three will be arraigned.

The arraignment hearing will reveal the charges against the suspects and whether or not they will be tried as adults. If so, a guilty conviction could result in a lifetime prison sentence.

According to ABC News, the teens followed Lane in their car as he jogged along the road, shot him in the back and drove off. There were no witnesses, but, after reviewing various surveillance tapes, police saw the car pull in behind a hotel 11 minutes after the shooting before speeding off.

"They followed him in the car to that area, shot him in the back and drove off," Ford said.

Peter Lane, Christopher's father, spoke to reporters outside the Essendon Baseball Club in Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

"He was an athlete going for a jog like he would do five or six days a week in terms of his training schedule," Lane said. "It's happened, it's wrong and we just try and deal with it the best we can."
