Born in 1955, he started performing when he was five years old. In his younger days, he attended the Trinity School in New York. Later on he transferred to the Professional Children's school. He graduated at the age of 15. He initially started at Juilliard School but moved on to Columbia University. However, he dropped out of Columbia and attended Harvard later on. His portfolio includes folk music like Blue Grass Music, traditional Chinese music, Argentinian and Brazilian music, too.

In 2006, he was enlisted as a United Nations Messenger of peace.

It is interesting to note that President Obama appointed Ma to serve on the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

Ma's goal is to bring together talents from all over, diverse artists and musicians. In his efforts, he formed the Silk Road Ensemble and the Silk Road Connect - for children. He continues to make music in order to bring people and music together.
