Sean Jackman, a 24-year-old Stoughton man has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and homicide under Ch. 265, Sect. 13½, popularly known as Melanie's Law by the Norfolk County Grand Jury. He is accused of drunk driving that killed his ex-girl friend in Canton.

The 20-year-old Curry College junior, Evan Bard, died in a crash, shortly before midnight on May 10.

Investigators state that Jackman along with Bard were travelling on the westbound side of Bolivar Street in Canton when their 1995 Toyota Camry hit a wall and then crashed into a tree. Bard suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene, while Jackman sustained head injuries and was immediately taken to the Boston Medical Center, where he was first arraigned on May 13.

According to their friends, they were returning home from a wedding at the time of the crash. Bard, an Agawam native, was a cheerleader and nursing major at Curry.

If convicted, Jackman will be sentenced to 20-years in prison and faces a fine of up to $25,000 and a lifetime driving ban. He pleaded not guilty on May 13.
