American colleges and universities have dominated the top 10 spots in the 2013 list of 100 best schools in the world. The figures were released by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Eight U.S. universities feature in the top 10 rankings, while just two U.K. schools have made the cut. The center determined this years' list of best universities in the world after considering seven indicators including publications, influence, citations, patents, faculty, employment and education. The center then compared each indicator with the university and arrived at a numerical score.

Harvard University leads the 2013 rankings for the top 100 universities in the world as it is credited with providing access to the best education world-wide. The university also secured first rank in the 2013 Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings with an overall score of 100.

Regarded as one of the prestigious universities in the world, Stanford University, claimed the second spot in the list. The university is home to 52 Nobel Prize winners, 30 living billionaires and 17 astronauts. Stanford's faculty and alumni have established several prominent companies including Google, Hewlett-Packard, Nike, Sun Microsystems, and Yahoo!

Britain's Oxford and Cambridge universities, commonly referred to as 'Oxybridge,' were the only two institutions that featured in the top 10. These two universities occupied the third and the fifth rank behind Stanford and Massachusetts, respectively.

In the top 100 overall best universities in the world, U.S. continues to dominate with 57, followed by England and Japan with 6 each. Other countries to have scrapped through the list are France, Canada, Israel, Switzerland, Australia, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Scotland, Singapore, South Korea and Sweden.
