Consequences of being beautiful!?

Renmin University recently experienced a technical difficulty when its official home page crashed on Monday evening after photos of an attractive young female student attracted too much server traffic. The website was recently redesigned.

The student in question is Kang Kang, who is now referred to as 'Goddess of Renmin University of China.' This term is popularly used among young Chinese people when describing pretty women whom they find unattainable.

Kang, an arts school graduate majoring in the double bass, is seen wearing a graduation costume in pictures.

The university officials recently changed the background picture of its homepage from a conservative image with Kang's photo Sunday night. Within few minutes, the university received sudden new incoming traffic and recorded overwhelming visitor numbers. People were rushing to visit the page in an attempt to catch a glimpse of the university student which ultimately led to its collapse the following evening.

Kang seen in different poses around Renmin University School of Art was photographed by, Mao Yanzheng, who is a professional photographer and a 2011 university graduate.

Yanzheng said that he shot over 300 photos and selected two photos out of the lot that were best and appropriate for the university's website. He agreed to the photo shoot as a favour to the university.

"It's unbelievable that it takes only one photo to make a person famous," Mao said.

While some people appreciated it,

"This student embodies the elegant, fresh look of our graduates."

Other people slammed the university's decision terming it as a deviation from its fundamental principles.

"Is Renmin University about entertainment or academic work? Do schools now advertise their academic work, or how beautiful their students are?" one person asked online.

"Do schools now advertise their academic work, or how beautiful their students are," another internet user said.

The breakdown of the university's website came at the wrong time as hundreds of students might be trying to access the official page to gain information regarding admission to the school. High school graduates have just completed their college entrance exams.

Many people suspect that the university have used the photos to lure new students.
