NASA news came a few days ago with an image showing a giant dark hole on the Sun's surface. Could this mean a bad thing?

A breathtaking image was released by NASA, spotting massive hole that spreads across the surface of the sun. The dark spot is called coronal hole - an astronomical phenomenon where sun's magnetic field opens into interplanetary space. It causes high speed of solar wind where the hot material speeds outward. As the areas have less hot plasma, they are not as bright as the surrounding areas. NASA added that the Sun's holes could appear for days and even months.

What NASA has to say about the coronal hole?

It is harmless. NASA explained that the giant hole on the sun's surface is a result of 'less hot plasma' which makes the surface to appear darker than the surroundings, CSMonitor reported. The image also shows how incredible the view of auroras can be.

Tom Yulsman managed to put the images from NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory together and created an animated sequence of the sun with its dark spots. Explaining his video, Yulsman said that the dark area that covers the top of the Sun is called coronal hole and it has little radiation emitted, plus, it appears from time to time.

Is this NASA news, a bad sign for Earth?

The NASA news about a hole in the sun has made people worried but many experts calmed the public by saying that the astronomical phenomenon is not harmful. However, it may lead to several problems on Earth, such as, GPS errors, disrupt radio signals or communication, HuffingtonPost reported.
