Owner of Comics Cube in downtown Kokomo,  Shawn Hilton, offers scholarships to Taylor High School students. However, he has some requirements.

In a report by Kokomo Tribune, the scholarship was awarded to a member of the Taylor High School graphic novel club. The requirements of Hiton's Comics Cubed Excelsior Scholarship are, those who will receive the scholarships must attend  college after they graduate high school, and they cannot be awarded a sport scholarship.

Students who are members of Taylor High School graphic novel club, come together to discuss graphic novels, superhero movies, comic books, and TV shows. The  athletic director at Taylor, Steve Dishon, started the club several years ago.

The director founded the club because he wanted to help students realize that reading is not boring. Reading materials such as graphic novels and comic books may get students away from video games. The club also lets the students share their interests, thus making their social skills and confidence boosted.

Taylor art club is run by Dishon's wife, which has teamed up with Taylor High School graphic novel club. According to athletic director, it makes sense if the two clubs come together because comic books are art-driven, and each club has several students.

Meanwhile, the comic book owner, Hilton, started giving scholarship four years ago. The reason behind the name of Comics Cubed Excelsior Scholarship is because Stan Lee, the chairman of Marvel, usually uses the word Excelsior, My San Antonio reported.  Lee is known for helping to create several popular comic book heroes such as Spider-Man.

The publication added that Hilton chose to give scholarships to Taylor students because  this is the only school that has a graphic novel club. Despite of that, the comic store owner also interested to donate comics to one of the classes. He holds a fundraiser where people can pay 50 cents to buy a kid-friendly comic book.
