Google and the energy storage company Tesla have the same opinion about autonomous vehicles will make streets safer.

Both the technology company and the automotive company are racing toward a driverless future. But, when Google tested a few years ago their self-driving car prototype on employees, the technology company noticed something that would take it down a different direction from Tesla.

As the driver traveled with the modified Lexus SUVs on a freeway at 60 mph, the man behind the wheel quickly started to rummage through their bags, taking their hands off the steering wheel and the drivers were fiddling with their phones, according to LA times.

The head of Google's self-driving car program - Chris Urmson, said in a statement that within a couple of minutes, everybody thought the self-driving car prototype worked well, and after that, they have a firm trust of it to work. And people were doing ridiculous things in the car.

While Tesla's self-driving feature called "autopilot," which was led by tech billionaire Elon Musk, stated that those individuals who participate in the test drive will help refine the technology.

Before a fatal crash in Florida in May, the drivers of Tesla had logged some 130 million miles using the "autopilot."

All major technology and car companies are running after the self-driving technology as the future of transportation. But, the earliest innovators were Tesla and Google - and both companies were taking very contrasting approaches, based on the report of NPR.

However, on Friday, BMW, the German luxury vehicle manufacturing company, stated that they intend to offer a self-driving car in 2021. And BMW's self-driving car will have much different technology compared to Tesla Model S.

At a news conference in Munich, BMW chief executive - Harald Krüger, stated that their company is standing at the brink of a new revolution, NY Times reported.
