David Petraeus, the former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director and retired general, will don a new hat beginning August as a visiting professor at the City University of New York (CUNY).

Petraeus, 60, will be the next visiting professor of public policy at the university's Macaulay Honors College.

Last November, the director resigned after admitting to having an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, a fellow West Point graduate.

Petraeus' lawyer, Robert Barnett, told the New York Post he chose CUNY among other colleges because he admires its diversity of students, location and offerings.

Petraeus will lead a seminar on global economic slowdown at Macaulay Honors College.

"I look forward to leading a seminar at Macaulay that examines the developments that could position the United States -- and our North American partners -- to lead the world out of the current global economic slowdown," he said in a statement.

In addition to seminars, Petraeus will be interacting with students on their research projects.

Chancellor Matthew Goldstein said that the college was 'profoundly honored' to welcome the general.

"With his appointment, our students will have a unique opportunity to learn about public policy firsthand from a distinguished leader with extraordinary experience and expertise in international security issues, intelligence matters and nation-building," Goldstein said.

The extramarital affair with Paula Broadwell that ended his career was brought to light as a result of an FBI investigation into emails she sent to another woman.

He has been married to wife Holly for 38 years and they have two children, Anne and Stephen Petraeus.

Petraeus, was a four-star general who commanded U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He was a top graduate at the United States Military Academy, United States Army Command and General Staff College. He also taught at United States Military Academy.

Petraeus earned a master's degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and a Ph.D degree in International Affairs from Princeton University.

He held a fellowship at Georgetown University.
