Boston University (BU) has decided to retire jersey number '6' that was worn by Boston University ice hockey coach, Jack Parker, during his playing days (1984 to 1987) for the Terriers.

His will be the second number retired by the University hockey program. In 1999, the university retired 'No. 24', that was worn by BU freshman Travis Roy, when he crashed into the boards in his first BU hockey game, which left him paralyzed below the neck, 1995.

Parker, announced his retirement, March, after coaching the team for 40 years and finishing his tenure with 897 wins, 21 Beanpot titles and three national championships.

He was to retire at the end of the 2011-12 seasons, but continued his job following some controversies surrounding his players.

"Forty years is a long time to be at the same institution in the same job. I think I'm a little long in the tooth. I don't think I've had the focus I need to have. I haven't lost a step, but I don't want to lose a step," Parker said.

However, he will continue to serve at the university as a special assistant to President Robert A. Brown's 'Campaign for Boston University', the University's first comprehensive fundraising campaign.

David Quinn , 46, will replace Parker as coach. He played for BU and was an assistant coach at the college from 2004 to 2009.

 "I'd like to thank President Brown and Mike Lynch for giving me this incredible opportunity and entrusting me with the BU hockey program," Quinn told ESPN. "I surely wouldn't be in this position if it was not for Jack Parker and I'm very lucky to be able to call him my coach, mentor and friend. I look forward to continuing that and the legacy that Coach Parker leaves behind."

Quinn has served as a coach at BU, Northeastern, and the University of Nebraska Omaha, the U.S. National Under-17 team, the American Hockey League's Lake Erie Monsters and lastly, the NHL's Colorado Avalanche.

He was one of Parker's assistant coaches during the 2008-09 season that saw the team winning the national title.
