Samsung is developing a standalone VR headset that doesn't need a smartphone to operate, just like units from HTC and Oculus that burn a hole in your pocket.

The South Korean tech giant is developing an avant-garde stand-alone VR headset. According to reports on EWeek, the state-of-the-art device won't require a user to plug it into a compatible smartphone, unlike the company's basic $100 Gear VR consumer headset.

The looming stand-alone VR headset will sport an array of awe-inspiring features such as positional tracking (which is unavailable in the Gear VR).

Samsung's head of R&D for software and services, Injong Rhee disclosed the company's plans for the exceptional VR headset during last week's Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco, reports Variety.

"We are working on wireless and dedicated VR devices, not necessarily working with our mobile phone," Injong Rhee said.

Although Samsung is reportedly working on features such as hand and gesture tracking for upcoming generations of virtual reality devices, however Rhee noted these features won't be available any time soon.

"VR is amazing, but the industry is still at its infancy," Rhee added.

Samsung had collaborated with Oculus to create its first VR headset, the Gear VR. The South Korean multinational conglomerate company's next creation, however could potentially set it against its partner, Oculus.

Packed with positional tracking feature that enables users to stand up and walk around just like in a virtual world, there is no confirmation if the upcoming standalone VR headset will actually be wireless or it may need to be connected to a PC via cables just like a Vive or Rift.

Samsung is likely to face a stiff competition from the likes of HTC or Oculus in its bid to create a wireless VR headset, however, if the company pulls it off, it will be a huge win for the South Korean company.

Nevertheless, a possibility of a standalone headset equipped with positional tracking affecting the company's alliance with Oculus cannot be ignored.
