Former University of Delaware athlete, Elena Delle Donne made it to the US Olympic Women's Basketball Team and will compete in the Rio Summer Games 2016.

Elena Delle Donne, former University of Delaware women's basketball athlete will now be playing for US women's basketball Olympics team in the Rio Summer 2016 games. Delle Donne was the WNBA MVP last season and the first athlete from the university to compete in the Olympic Games where she is hoping to add another gold for the US.

Delle Donne played for the women's basketball team at University of Delaware from 2009 to 2013, Delmarva Public Radio reported. Prior to securing a spot at the US Olympic team, Delle Donne has an impressive track record. She played for the Chicago Sky team where she was awareded the Rookie of the Year awards as a combo guard, Sports Illustrated Kids noted. Additionally, she has led Chicago Sky to three playoffs and had one of the highest scores in 2015.

The US Olympic Women's Basketball Team already has five gold wins in the last several years beginning in 1996 and this year, they are pushing for the sixth. Delle Donne's debut in the Olympic team will be joined by Brittney Griner and Breanna Stewart, Team USA shared. The team will be captained by forward Tamika Catchings and guards Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird. This year's Olympics will be their third or fourth tournament representing US. The team is completed by Sylvia Fowles, Seimone Augustus and Londond 2012 Olympic champions Maya Moore, Lindsay Whalen, Tina Charles and Angel McCoughtry.

However, Candace Parker was not chosen to play for the Rio Summer Olympics 2016, ESPN wrote. Parker has won two golds for the team in 2008 and 2012. She has also won the MVP award more than once. The committee who selected the players reportedly had a difficult time. The US Women's Basketball Team will be coached by Geno Auriemma.
