Despite committing to the University of Michigan before Jim Harbaugh was even hired, four-star offensive lineman Erik Swenson announced his de-commitment from the school on Wednesday.

MLive.com reported receiving a text message from Swenson in which he stated Michigan pulled its scholarship offer and cancelled his planned visit to Ann Arbor. Swenson said he didn't get an explanation and declined to comment further.

In a statement he posted to his Twitter account, he announced he was leaving his commitment to Michigan, leaving him without a school two weeks before National Signing Day.

A member of the class of 2016, Swenson committed to Michigan when Brady Hoke was still the team's head coach. But he told MLive.com in June he was sticking with his choice. Recruiting classes are typically subject to change during a coaching change, whether the new coach withdraws offers or players opt to leave.

That did not appear to be the case with Swenson, and he kept his commitment throughout Harbaugh's first season at Michigan. SB Nation noted these last-minute scholarship withdrawals are not uncommon despite how unfair it is to the player suddenly without an offer right before signing day.

The NCAA's rules on recruiting will not allow Harbaugh to comment on Swenson's retracted scholarship.

247 Sports ranked Swenson 31st overall among offensive tackles and listed schools like Northwestern, Illinois, Notre Dame, and Ohio State that have recruited him. He has apparently made none of his allotted five official visits.
