A University of North Texas police officer shot and killed a student who was advancing on him while wielding an axe.

According to The Dallas Morning News, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office identified Ryan McMillan, who turned 21 on Saturday, as the deceased. The UNT police have not released the name of the officer who shot McMillan.

Police reportedly responded to reports that someone was breaking cars' windows near campus around 1 a.m. Sunday. McMillan "advanced" when officers arrived on the scene and was shot multiple times.

North Texas Daily obtained footage it reported was McMillan walking in what appears to be a parking garage holding the axe. The newspaper reported the student was a pre-hospitality sophomore from Fort Worth who just finished his first semester at UNT after transferring from Weatherford College.

The UNT police are expected to release the police report Monday, though it is unclear if they will also release footage of the shooting. In a statement addressing the shooting, UNT President Neal Smatresk said the officer who shot McMillan is on administrative leave.

"This is a tragic day for our university family. Early this morning, one of our UNT Police officers fatally shot a suspect after responding to reports of a person knocking out car windows near the intersection of Oak and Fry streets," Smatresk said. "When the officer arrived, he encountered a white male suspect in the street who was carrying an axe. The suspect advanced on the officer and the officer fired at the suspect, who sadly was one of our students. The suspect was the only person injured. His name has not yet been released by the Medical Examiner.

"This is a tragic event that saddens us as a university community. We offer our condolences to the individuals, their families and all involved."
