The University of South Carolina's Board of Regents approved the hiring of Will Muschamp as the school's head football coach.

According to ESPN, Muschamp agreed with the school on a five-year, $16 million contract Monday morning. He emphasized that he will not try to replace Steve Spurrier, the school's beloved Head Ball Coach, while also setting high goals for the Gamecocks.

"The ceiling is limitless," Muschamp said in a statement. "We're about winning championships here.

"There's only one Coach Spurrier. I need to be Will Muschamp."

But like Spurrier, Muschamp is a former Florida head coach. From 2011 to 2014, Muschamp led Florida to a 28-21 record, and only ever finished first in the SEC East once - a tie with Georgia. He then spent last season as the defensive coordinator at Auburn.

South Carolina is coming off a 3-9 season in which Spurrier resigned six games in. The school was said to be pursuing Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, and even Houston head coach Tom Herman.

Muschamp is facing an uphill rebuild with South Carolina, and he emphasized the process would take time.

"It's kind of like marriage," he said in his statement. "That first year, there's a little adjustment. By that fifth year, you're doing a little better."
