The Big 12 wants a conference championship game on its own terms, but the Big Ten wants familiarity throughout the Power Five.

Speaking with ESPN on Sunday, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby expressed doubt about the championship game deregulation rule facing a recently introduced amendment from the Big Ten. The amendment would require a conference championship to be played between two division winners.

With the deregulation, the Big 12 wanted to keep intact its 10-member lineup and have a conference championship between the top two teams, sans divisions. If the Big Ten's amendment passes, that would not be possible since 12 teams and two divisions are currently required for conference championships.

"We're trying to work our way through it, but I'm less certain of the outcome than I was before," Bowlsby told ESPN.com. "We don't think we ought to be forced into adding schools in order to have a championship game, but it could end up that way.

"We don't want to play two five-team divisions then have the potential of everyone else has the two best teams in one division," he said. "We don't think we ought to be forced into that sort of thing."

Last year, Ohio State snuck into the College Football Playoff after winning the Big Ten Championship while TCU and Baylor were left out after the Big 12 named them co-champions. This year, the committee voted Oklahoma into the playoff, though the Sooners slipped from third to fourth in the final ranking.

"I agree a conference should not have to expand in order to have a championship game," Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany told ESPN.com. "That wouldn't be right. That's tail wagging dog. On the other hand, I want to have some familiarity - some knowledge as to how these things are going to play out. I don't want unintended consequences. I don't want to wake up one morning and see some odd structure that's unfamiliar.

"We don't think he should have to expand to have the same option we have, but we feel he should have a structure similar to ours."

If the Big 12 does decide to implement a conference championship, and if the Big Ten's amendment passes, expect a new conference realignment, SB Nation reported.

Look alive, Houston, the Power 5 may come calling. Or maybe Notre Dame and/or BYU will finally join a conference?
