The top-rated running back in the recruiting class of 2016 has backed out of his verbal commitment to Ohio State.

In a statement posted to his Twitter account, Kareem Walker confirmed his decision and stated he would not publicly talk about his recruitment until he signs a Letter of Intent and enrolls at the school. In his statement, he referenced his relationship with Ohio State's football staff "changing," though he did not elaborate.

"It is after much consideration, thought and meeting multiple times with my family and coaches that I'm rescinding my verbal commitment to Ohio State," Walker wrote. "At this point the relationship has changed. I've wrestled with this for a few months and truly wanted it to work out. However I do not think it is fair to Ohio State or to myself to remain committed when my heart is telling me otherwise. I will be taking my visits and ultimately making a decision that will best serve me and my family. I will not be commenting any further on my recruitment until after I submit my LOI and enroll for spring semester. I need to focus on team, my grades and my play."

Cleveland.com learned Walker is not expected to make his official visit to Ohio State's campus on Thursday, so there is likely little chance he will re-commit to the Buckeyes. Making matters worse for Ohio State, Michigan is expected to make Walker a primary recruiting target.

Walker has already visited Ann Arbor and can four more official visits. 247 Sports indicated he is also interested in Alabama, Penn State, Ole Miss, and Arizona State. Both 247 Sports and ESPN rank Walker among the 50 best players in the class of 2016 and rate him the top running back.
