Police have a suspect in custody after four people were shot on Northern Arizona University's (NAU) Flagstaff, Ariz. campus early Friday morning.

Of the four shot, one died and the other three are injured and being treated at the Flagstaff Medical Center, NAU said in a statement.

"The incident took place outside Mountain View Hall on the northeast end of the Flagstaff Campus. The first call of shots fired came in at 1:20 a.m.," read the statement. "NAUPD is working on the investigation with the Flagstaff Police Department at the scene."

According to NBC News, police arrested Steven Jones, an 18-year-old freshman at NAU who allegedly starting shooting fellow students during a dispute. NAUPD Police Chief Greg Fowler told reporters at a news conference Friday morning the confrontation happened outside a residence hall home to fraternity members.

Fowler also indicated the incident could have involved more people, as the dispute "turned physical" between two groups of students. It is not clear whether or not any of the students were members of fraternities.

The international Delta Chi organization told The Washington Post some of its members were "involved" in the shooting, but would not disclose details. The fraternity stated the shooting "was not a chapter related incident."

"We do not have any information on the victims nor do we know if the deceased individual is a member of the Fraternity," read the statement.

Fowler noted state laws prohibit firearms from college campuses unless they are locked in a car.

"This is not going to be a normal day at NAU," NAU President Rita Cheng said at the news conference, noting that classes would continue as scheduled Friday. "Our hearts are heavy."
