Southern Oregon University (SOU) administrators decided to close the school's Ashland campus Wednesday due to an unspecified threat identified either on or near the premises.

According to The Oregonian, SOU called the danger a "potential threat" and indicated it was "found in a school facility." Campus and Ashland police are investigating the unidentified threat.

"Due to an unconfirmed threat currently under investigation by Ashland Police Department, the main SOU Ashland campus will be closed Wednesday, October 7th. Classes and other activities on Ashland campus are cancelled," read a statement posted to the school's website.

SOU sits about 120 miles south of Umpqua Community College (UCC) in Roseburg, where a gunman killed nine people and injured seven more last week.

On Monday, The Philadelphia Daily News learned of a vague threat toward "a university near Philadelphia." The threat appeared on 4chan, the same website where a similarly vague message appeared the night before the UCC shooting.

The next day, the Community College of Philadelphia went on lockdown for multiple hours when a student was spotted on campus wielding a gun. Police arrested the student, but deemed the situation a "personal dispute" with another student, not a planned attack.

"The investigation is ongoing right now so we've been asked not to release specifics about it at this point," Ryan Brown, head of community and media relations for SOU, told NBC News early Wednesday.

It is not clear if the threat against SOU is related in any way to the UCC shooting or the vague threat made toward Philadelphia-area schools.
