Microsoft's video chat service Skype experienced a major global service outage Monday morning, The Verge reported.

The outage, which began at 4:23 a.m. (ET), lasted for several hours. The bug locked some users out of their account while others complained that they were appearing offline "even when they were connected to the Internet, meaning the service would not allow them to message others or make calls," Popular Science reported.

Skype officials announced they were resolving the issue later that morning.

"We have identified the network issue which prevented users from logging in and using Skype today," they  indicated in a blog post. "We're in the process of reconnecting our users, and focused on restoring full service. The issue did not affect Skype for Business users."

According to NDTV, only Skype's clients were affected by the outage, "users can still use Skype for Web (the version of Skype that works on a Web browser). Also, users while can't make voice and video calls using Skype's desktop and mobile clients, they can still send instant messages to their friends and colleagues."

According to City A.M., the outage likely affected millions of users in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Skype services were fully restored by 8 p.m.
