With the regular season just days away, the Ohio State football team's highly publicized quarterback competition had to be put on hold.

Cardale Jones, the one-time third-string QB of the Buckeyes, went to the emergency room Wednesday night after experiencing severe headaches, The Toledo Blade reported, but was released early Thursday morning.

A spokesman for Ohio State University (OSU) stated the hopeful starting QB is "doing fine today." His mother, Florence, told The Blade her son was tested as a precaution, but the results did not show anything concerning.

"They are checking him out, [but] it's just a headache," she said by text message.

ESPN reported Thursday that Jones experienced a migraine, a more intense headache that can also have several side effects like sensitivity to various sensory stimuli. Fortunately for Jones, the Buckeyes wrapped up its summer practices the same day he went to the hospital. Though he and Barrett are close friends, the competition to start at QB has reportedly been intense.

"Cardale Jones was examined last night at the OSU Wexner Medical Center," the university said in a statement. "He was released from the center following the examination and he is doing fine today."

Either Jones or J.T. Barrett will start on Monday night against Virginia Tech, but OSU head football coach Urban Meyer has been increasingly indicating that he will give both passers playing time in the game, ESPN noted.

"I have an idea who's gonna take the first snap," Meyer said at a recent press conference. "The favorite? I'm not sure I like that word, but I have a feeling on who's gonna take the first snap. I still think that after today."
