A 21-year-old student at the University of Georgia (UGA) was found dead in her dorm room, but investigators say the circumstances are a mystery at this point.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the student was identified as Mikal Ghirmazghi after her family was notified of her death. Law enforcement and paramedics were called to Russell Hall around 6 p.m. Thursday and determined the student was dead on arrival.

Later that evening, the Clarke County coroner Sonny Wilson arrived but could not give a cause of death.

"University of Georgia Police Investigators and the Coroner are on scene and the investigation is on-going," the school said in an announcement. "Preliminary investigation revealed no obvious cause of death, nor were there any obvious signs of foul play.

"Additional information will be released as the investigation progresses."

Wilson told the Athens Banner-Herald Ghirmazghi's mother disclosed her daughter said she was not feeling well Thursday morning.

"When she was talking to her mother Thursday morning she said she didn't feel good," Wilson said. "She didn't report for some classes that day and she wasn't answering her phone. Her mother called the folks at Russell Hall and they had someone check on her and it seems she had been deceased all day.

"She had some medical history and there were some diabetic issues, but I don't know if that's what caused her to die."

Carleen Porter, a sophomore at UGA, recalled living in the same residence hall as Ghirmazghi the previous year.

"She was always smiling," Porter told the Journal-Constitution. "It could be 3 a.m., and if I saw her on the hall, she would be smiling and asking me how I was."
