Wesleyan University has confirmed that 11 students were hospitalized Sunday after what is apparently an overdose to the party drug colloquially known as "Molly."

According to the Hartford Courant, two Wesleyan students were flown to Hartford Hospital and were in critical condition. Police began investigating immediately and are trying to find the source of the drugs, trying to figure out if the students overdosed on a "bad batch."

Lauren Rubenstein, a spokeswoman for Wesleyan, told the Courant four students went to the hospital on their own and the other seven were transported in some manner. Molly is the most commonly used term for the drug also called MDMA and ecstasy, known to influence a feeling of euphoria for its users.

"I think there are a lot of questions," Rubenstein told the newspaper. "This is still very much under investigation."

Michael Whaley, vice president for student affairs at Wesleyan, sent two campus-wide emails addressing the situation, the Wesleyan Argus reported. He emphasized that the school would provide the student body with more information when it is available.

"Several [students] are in serious condition but I can confirm that none have passed," Whaley told the Argus.

Middletown police Capt. Gary Wallace said there were two students in "serious condition," in addition to the two in "critical condition," the Courant reported. Despite its different names, Wallace said the Molly in this case was a pure form of MDMA, but it still could have been "bad."

The captain indicated the police's top priority in the investigation is to find the source of the drugs that the students overdosed on.

Said Wallace, "Side effects can be life threatening, and we are attempting to assist the medical providers in obtaining any and all information."
