Charlie Weis' first extended break from coaching football, as he admitted his career appears to be over.

Speaking with the South Bend Tribune, Weis said he thought it would be "highly doubtful" he would "ever coach again." At 58 years old, he has held several different position at both the college and professional level, but this is the first time he will take a season off.

Weis was born in Trenton, N.J., but he graduated from the University of Notre Dame. From 1979 to 1984, he held assistant jobs at two N.J. high schools before spending the next four years on the University of South Carolina's football coaching staff. He later did stints in the NFL with the New York Giants, New England Patriots and New York Jets before landing the job he will be remembered for.

After the University of Florida snagged Urban Meyer in 2004, Notre Dame signed Weis to a six-year contract to be the head football coach of the Fighting Irish. He stayed there five years before going to the Kansas City Chiefs and University of Florida. He has spent the last three seasons at the University of Kansas as their head coach.

"I've been driving my wife nuts," Weis told the Tribune of his umeployment. "I think she's ready for me to do something - anything."

But the now-former coach has been taking advantage of his down time and will be attending his former Irish quarterback Jimmy Clausen's wedding in Palm Springs, Calif. He is also going to devote more time and energy to his Hannah and Friends charity, named and created in honor of his daughter, who was diagnosed with global developmental delays as a toddler.

"But what it's done for me and Maura is that it's allowed us to be philanthropists and really do well by the special needs community. As far as this new job, I know there's a lot of travel involved and a lot of learning. But this is new territory for me," Weis said. "One of the things people thought, when I left Notre Dame, 'Well that's it for Hannah and Friends,' that we were just going to bail out of here. We're completely the opposite of what those thoughts are. We're totally committed. My daughter is already taken care of. She's all set. We just think we can do a lot more."
