Bowdoin College in Maine will provide the son of one of the slain New York City police officers full financial aid to finish out his education.

The private college announced Monday that beginning in January, or "whenever he is ready to return" it will give first-year student Justin Ramos full financial aid to enable him to complete his Bowdoin education, Campus Reform reported.

Ramos' father, Rafael, 40, and Wenjian Liu, 32, were "ambushed and murdered" execution-style in Brooklyn while sitting in their patrol car on Saturday, CBS News reported. The officers were rushed to Woodhull Hospital, where they died.  Authorities said the lone gunman ran into the subway and shot himself in the head.

"We are eager to welcome Justin back to campus for the start of our second semester in January, or whenever he is ready to return, and we will do everything we can to support him through this period," school officials said in a statement. "In the meantime, we will respect his privacy and that of his family as they deal with this terrible loss."

The New York Yankee Silver Shield Foundation also reportedly offered to provide funding for the education for the children of the two officers, who were both shot and killed by 28-year-old Ismaayi Brinsley. Liu was married but did not have children. Besides Justin, Ramos was also the father of another son, 13-year-old Jaden.

"This is in keeping with Bowdoin's practice of meeting the full financial need of each of our students for all four years," Bowdoin said on Monday. "We are grateful for the Yankee Silver Shield Foundation's offer to assist, but Bowdoin has it covered."
