The University of Leicester in the United Kingdom has announced that it is rolling out free Wi-Fi across its entire campus.

"As a large university with a constant stream of visiting alumni, guest lecturers, prospective students and other visitors, providing Wi-Fi is essential to meet today's expectations. Connectivity is expected from all our visitors and we are meeting this need," Daniel Lawrence, Deputy Director of IT, told CBR Online.

On Friday, the university replaced their "guest Wi-Fi" is with a "visitor Wi-Fi" provided by The Cloud, a BSkyB company, via 500 access points, CBR Online reported. It will cover 69 locations. 

With the launch of this new Wi-Fi, all visitors to the University of Leicester campus will be able to go online quickly and easily -- allowing access to the school's app, plus online tools including educational resources and social media.

"We all live in a mobile-first world and institutions like the University of Leicester are responding by providing Wi-Fi access across the entire campus." said Roger Matthews, Commercial Director at The Cloud.

Guests and visitors to the University of Leicester campus only need select "The Cloud" Wi-Fi network and register to then have access to any of the Wi-Fi provider's 22,000 UK hotspots.

With the average UK adult spending almost four hours a day online or on non-voice mobile and tablet activities*, Wi-Fi is vital to prospective students, their families, guest lecturers, researchers and those attending University events.
