Heisman Trophy candidate and starting Georgia Bulldogs running back Todd Gurley has been cleared of the recent assault accusation against him.

According to USA Today, Athens-Clarke County police confirmed the matter was a mix-up where the accuser mistook Gurley for a white male. Gurley was at the bar during the incident, but told investigators the accuser yelled a racial slur at him before getting hit by someone else.

The accuser was a 20-year-old student at the University of Georgia (UGA), the Athens Banner-Herald reported. He called the police around 3:15 Sunday morning to report being assaulted by Gurley an hour earlier at the Bourbon Street Bar & Grill on Broad Street.

Gurley told police he was at the bar with friends while the student was taking photos of himself with the running back in the background. The student then accused Gurley of angrily attacking him for it.

However, police said surveillance footage showed a white male to be the one who hit the student taking photos of himself. Gurley did not see the student get punched, as he was picking up the hat he had dropped, but then saw him being pushed around.

When police arrived at the student's apartment to interview him, he admitted to have had a few drinks that night but was not drunk. According to the Banner-Herald, the police report showed that the student "became defensive" during the interview and declined to pursue an investigation.

Gurley has been outstanding for the 3-1 Bulldogs thus far. According to ESPN, he has accumulated 610 yards, six touchdowns and is averaging 8.8 yards per carry, nearly a first down every time he runs the ball. While the Heisman Trophy tends to find its way into the hands of a quarterback, Gurley has at least sparked debate as to why he deserves it over Marcus Mariota, Oregon's sensational passer.
