The Grand Prairie independent school district's (GPISD) Education Foundation has received a $10,000 donation from a Texas Trust for scholarships for the class of 2015.

The money from the Texas Trust Credit Union will be awarded to 20 students attending the University of Texas at Arlington. Each student will receive $500 toward tuition or books. Student scholarship recipients will be selected by the Grand Prairie Education Foundation in the spring of 2015.

"Texas Trust is helping bring Dr. Carolyn Wicker's dream alive," said Bernie Ponzio, incoming president of the GPISD Education Foundation, speaking of the current board president. "Dr. Wicker's vision for the foundation has been to provide a scholarship to every student interested in attending college."

Texas Trust has been a strong financial supporter of the foundation. It is also one of the largest credit unions in North Texas and the 17st largest in Texas, provides financial services that enable members to build brighter financial futures.

"This donation further demonstrates its commitment to helping us achieve Dr. Wicker's goal," Ponzio added.

They foundation was awarded the gift at the school district's convocation event on Aug. 18, marking the start of the new school year. The event, which took place in College park Center, also gave faculty a chance to become students again.

"Our goals for today are for our educators to learn a little bit about the university culture and be able to take that back to Grand Prairie ISD regardless of whether they are elementary teachers or they're high school teachers," Sam Buchmeyer, Grand Prairie ISD public information officer, is quoted as saying by the The Shorthorn. "We want it to be across the board."
