Luther Lowe, an alumnus of Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts (2001 batch), has made a unique gift to the school to launch a special course for its students.

The donation made in the form of bitcoins will create a computer science seminar on bitcoin, cryptocurrencies and collective computing - the first high school course in Arkansas and the United States. A combination of mathematics, computer science, humanities and economics faculty will be included in the delivery of the course.

The gift will also support the school's computer science, digital learning and outreach programs.

"ASMSA's community of learning is extremely fortunate to have alumni like Luther who are not only examples of how this experience positions students for leadership roles at the highest levels but are also interested in supporting the next generation of young Arkansans who are gaining invaluable academic and social experiences at ASMSA," said ASMSA Director Corey Alderdice.

Lowe said that the donation aims at helping the school in continuing to offer unique programs relating to exciting and growing fields. He said that ASMA offers one of the best STEM programs for high school graduates in the country.

"I'm thrilled to support their continued development of innovative educational programs by endowing the creation of a cryptocurrency course to be offered in Spring of 2015. "Given the growing importance of bitcoin and the future applications of block chain, ASMSA students will gain incredibly valuable experience and knowledge in the early stages of this emerging field," Lowe said in a statement.

Only two other institutions of higher education - the University of Puget Sound and Florida Gulf Coast University - have previously accepted gifts in bitcoin.
