Why The President of University of Washington Allowed Milo Yiannopoulos As Guest Speaker

By

Breitbart editor and right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopolous has been making headlines, especially where the University of Washington is involved. After the shooting incident that happened in the campus and the students protesting about the campus not being safe anymore, UW president Anna Mari Cauce has finally spoken, especially about the issue why she allowed Yiannopoulus to speak.

In an interview with the Chronicle on Higher Education, Cauce said that even if she did not allow Yiannopoulos to speak in the campus, the incident would still happen not because they are not ready about the situation but because these groups have been emboldened.

She also used an example to prove her point. She mentioned how neo-Nazi posters have been seen around campus. In the same way, these same groups can become aggressive with or without Yiannopoulos' appearing as a guest speaker.

Cauce also talked about students accusing her that by allowing Yiannopoulos, she exposed students to a lot of risk. She used her experience as a clinical psychologist to emphasize her point. She said that there was a point in her life to adopt every child she counseled but a colleague told her not to make any promises she cannot deliver.

In the same way, she wanted with all her heart to protect the campus and remove all the bad people but she knew she won't be able to deliver. She also issued a challenge to everyone to think what would they lose if that promise of creating gated universities would be fulfilled.

She said that if the campuses get to a point where they had to control what students do or do not do for fear that these aggressive groups might harm them, then those hate groups who seek to harm people have already won.
