According to Express UK "Resident Evil 7" took the top spot from "GTA 5" in the UK all-format games chart, getting almost three quarters of its sales on PS4. Although it might not be what it seems, as it's only the third best opening week for the Resident Evil franchise, behind "Resident Evil 5" in number one.

According to VG 24/7, the new purpose-built engine helped the game, figuratively fly off the shelves. Even downloads for the game's demo were well over 7 million. 

Sources say the newest "RE" title is also behind "Resident Evil 6" in terms of week one sales, and that's in spite of the largely negative reviews that came with the 2012 release. It is also notable to point out that video game sales are typically much lower in January, also the UK charts only factor in physical box sales, and not downloads.

"Resident Evil 7" share prices have done down, after news of the game shipping 2.5 million units in the first week. Looking at the figures, previous title "Resident Evil " 6 is believed to have shipped 4.5 million units in week one, while "Resident Evil 5" shipped 4 million. Now, shipped units don't necessarily reflect sales, as "Resident Evil 5" outperformed its successor in the UK.
