The University of Kansas police department has started investigating the rape of a 16-year-old girl which reportedly happened inside the campus last month. Officials announced the investigation on Thursday. According to Reuters, the incident was said to have happened at the dormitory where the University of Kansas basketball team is housed. The victim's identity has not been revealed by the police and no charges have been filed.

It was claimed that the attack took place between 10 p.m. on Dec. 17 and 5 a.m. on Dec. 18. In an email, Deputy Chief James Anguiano confirmed that five members of the Jayhawks basketball team came up as witnesses.

BuzzFeed News reported that the victim was 16 years old who was only visiting someone in the all-male building. Kansas University Police Chief Chris Keary did not comment on whether the victim notified the police herself.

Two 19-year-old women as well as an employee of the athletic department have been named in the police report. Police confirmed that the university's athletics department is giving full cooperation with the investigation.

KSHB noted that it was able to obtain a second police report for a runaway child. It had the same address and listed the same people named in the first report along with a sixth KU basketball player as witness.

The head basketball coach, Bill Seif, confirmed that some of the players were listed as potential witnesses. He further revealed that appropriate action will be taken if they are provided information that needs action.

Seif added that no suspensions have been made since investigation is still going on. Keary also declined to give information on the suspect or a timeline of when the case will be transferred to the district attorney.

Other listed offenses in the police report include "contributing to a child's misconduct, furnishing alcohol to a minor and use of drug paraphernalia or possession with intent to use." It is still unknown whether the department would move on with the charges.
