Shawn Johnson: Olympic Gold Gymnast Is Guest Speaker At Southeast Missouri State University

Enjoy "An Evening with Shawn Johnson" on Feb. 6 to talk about her career as an Olympic athlete and her life after sports.The Olympic gold medalist is going to feature her personal talk at the Southeast Missouri State University as part of the University's annual Speakers Series.

She is set to talk about her goals when she was a young girl, as reported by Southeast Missouri State. She always dreamed of being in the Olympics. In 2008, she joined the United States Olympics Gymnastics Team. She became a national champion and a world champion in the next few years. She competed against other countries but won the gold medal after her stunt in the balance beam and three silver medals in the individual all-around, floor exercise and team categories.

At a young age, Shawn Johnson attended Valley High School. During her younger years she already liked sports and dancing. She trained for gymnastics for about 25 hours per week. In 2009, she left public school and moved to Los Angeles, California. She then joined "Dancing with the Stars." After graduating high school with the help of a private tutor, she enrolled at Vanderbilt University and majored in psychology and nutrition.

Aside from her athletic life, she also published a book titled "Winning Balance" and then retired from gymnastics after injuring her knee. She also participates in charity work related to cancer and animal care. Watch a promo of her book below:

For those interested to witness the talk, the series with Shawn Johnson is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Show Me Center. The show is open to the public and tickets are sold online at the Show Me Center website, at $10.
